Rolling Sky Cover

Rolling Sky is a mobile app developed by Cheetah Mobile. It made its debut on January 20th, 2016, and used to be published by TurboChilli but the game was transferred to Cheetah Mobile. The app allows players to control Characters by swiping the screen with their fingers. The goal is to avoid obstacles and finish the levels.

As of this writing, this game has more than 100 levels. Some levels, such as Forest/Old & Ignite, and all the Alan walker levels were removed for various reasons. Please click here for the level list.

On April 12th, 2019, Rolling Sky was also ported to the Nintendo Switch by Rising Win Tech and Cheetah Mobile. It adds two new controls: the left C-stick and the Switch's gyroscope. All levels and characters are unlocked from the start, there are no ads nor Balls, and the touchscreen is less sensitive. It costs roughly $10 to buy.

The Steam port was released on February 20th, 2020, and it includes all of the levels from the Switch version. It is controlled via the mouse.

This game has been voted one of the top free games of 2017 on the App Store, and the best game of 2016 on Google Play.

History

Rolling Sky started development on September 25, 2015. The game was in development for a few months, until it's release in January 20, 2016. To coincide with this, a trailer was also released the next day.[1] The game had 5 levels at the initial release: Massif, Sky, Forest/Old, Desert, and Volcano.

The game was updated in March 2, 2016, adding a new level, City. As time went on, the game continued getting updates, adding new levels, and more changes. On November 17, 2016, the first bonus level was added: Illusion.

On September 26, 2018, coinciding with the 3 year anniversary since rolling sky started development, a new level was added, Happy Birthday. The level was designed to celebrate the game's 3 year anniversary with many cameos, like Mixed Beat, Outside Circus, and more. It's bonus, Anniversary, was released on October 10, 2018.

On April 12, 2019, Cheetah Mobile partnered with Rising Win Tech to port Rolling Sky and Rolling Sky 2 to the Nintendo Switch. The port had 38 levels, and was controlled using the left C-stick and the Gyroscope. On February 20, 2020, Its Steam Port also released, with 38 levels as well. The port was controlled using the mouse.

On February 20, 2020, coinciding with the Steam Port's release, due to ad fraud, Cheetah Mobile was banned from Google Play, so all of its games including the official Rolling Sky app, were removed from the Google Play Store. However, the game still got updates through TapTap.

On July 1, 2020, the game got its final update until 2022, which added Monster City. After that, the game got no updates for a long time and no word from Cheetah Mobile. In September 29, 2020, a Chinese Bilibili post was made, addressing a leak which revealed that @十年叔叔 stated that Rolling Sky would stop receiving updates. The post confirmed the end of the game, as well as other things.[2]

However, 2 years later, on October 28, 2022, another Bilibili post was made, by a person on the Rolling Sky team called SquareRoot.[3] The post confirmed the return of Rolling Sky, and that its content updates will resume. The post also discussed other things, such as SquareRoot's experience in the past 2 years, and the future of the game, as well as the game's return on the Google Play store. As of currently, the game's 38th bonus, Goblin Town released on iOS, and it released as well on TapTap. As of writing, the game's content updates are on resume.

Trivia

  • When The Winter was released, there was a teaser banner at the top that showed there might be a level editor and a new level at the same time. The level editor has yet to debut.
    • However, this is no longer the case, as only Cloud is released, and nothing more was implemented, added, or removed.
      • This was until June 2023, when the level editor got leaked by sqdl.
      • Before this, while Rolling Sky wasn’t updating, the developers already thought of adding a level editor, but because of a series of factors, it was canceled at that time.
  • This game is also available on the Amazon Appstore, but it isn't up-to-date, since it is updated only to VR Fairyland.[4]
  • Confusingly, the Steam description describes the controls in the same way as the Nintendo Switch's.
  • Due to ad fraud, Cheetah Mobile was banned from Google Play, so all of its games including the official Rolling Sky app, were removed from the Google Play Store on February 20th, 2020.
    • v3.4.5 (Delicacy Temptation's update) is the last version published on Google Play Store.
    • As confirmed, the game is going to return to the Google Play Store.
