A Mystery Box (Called the Crown Box in-game, and is called the Chest Box on the official Facebook) is a pickup item that was first introduced in Candy. When collected, it gives one of the items listed below:

Variant[]

New Year and Fireworks have their own unique Mystery Box, but Fireworks also has the normal mystery box that can give crowns. They don't spin and the question mark is white instead of blue. These Mystery Boxes don't give crowns, so they are optional to collect. There are 4 mystery boxes in that level but only 2 of them give rewards.

Alternatively, there are danger Mystery Boxes, which display an X, and its blue in color. Collecting it results in the player failing the level, similar to how crashing into obstacles or falling will result in the player failing the level.

System[]

The Mystery Box uses a system in which 10 places get randomized.

There are always 2 boxes that give either a ball or a shield.

There are always 3 boxes that give a crown.

The algorithm determining the placement of the mystery boxes decides all of the locations before the level starts.

In the screenshot, the elements labeled "BOX" are the ball or shield boxes. There are 2 per level. These boxes have a 16.667% chance of giving you a shield and an 83.333% chance of giving you a ball.

The elements labeled "CROWN" are self-explanatory, but they're non-static crowns, meaning they're contained within the mystery box. There are 3 per level.

The elements labeled "NOTHING" are also self-explanatory. No box spawns at that spot. There are 5 per level.

Trivia[]

  • This is also known as a Lucky Box.
    • It is referred to internally as the Crown Box.
  • Getting mystery boxes is as hard as getting crowns. This explains Cube's mystery boxes.
  • Every time a level is played, mystery boxes appear in 5 fixed random locations.
  • Most levels have 10 mystery box locations.
  • The easiest mystery box is found in Golden Christmas (Happy Birthday's last mystery box doesn't count).
  • A free mystery box is found in Happy Birthday.
  • The hardest mystery box is found in Cube.
  • There's a 2.77788889% chance that you'll get 2 shields in a single run.
  • If you collected a shield from a mystery box and did not use it, it will not save.
    • However, if you get 2 shields in one run or you're already equipped with a shield, then you can actually gain a shield.
  • Theoretically, if you are already equipped with a shield in Fireworks, gain several shields from the flying airplanes, and get some from the mystery boxes too, you can gain more than 10 shields in one run, but the chances are so low that you’ll probably never see it happen.

You can gain one shield (as above)

  • Happy Birthday's second-last mystery box is the only one that's collected under the effects of a Speed Variation.
  • There are also floating mystery boxes that appear in Lov-E and Dino Disco.
